Looking for a great home This fellow came to the island from the mainland for a new life and to find his family. For two months he has been getting in shape, trained, and we’ve gotten to learn what kind of dog he is. He is eager, devoted, doting, and a serious breed— traditionally bred as a working and badger hunting dog in Ireland. He is well suited to the rugged coastal lifestyle but he is not for the faint of heart or the weak of arm— when he sees a squirrel or rabbit on walks all 60lbs of him wants to take off afterwards. He was historically under-stimulated, and generally has a new lease on life attitude. He is confident, happy, eager to please, and friendly. He is looking for his home, and his family. He can live with other dogs but no cats, and if you have no dogs, no worries— he is a real lovebug and wants to be with his people above any animal companionship anyways. He currently goes to his dog bed when told, sits, lays down, waits for meals on a whistle upon eye contact (“look”) and sitting, can walk well mannered and steady on a leash, and charges along with great stamina and enthusiasm when off leash and hiking— always beside you, smiling and wagging (no matter how rainy), or modestly ahead looking back for you, or modestly behind and catching up after a pee stop. He doesn’t mind a lazy day either, but a snow day he will never take off— he likes rubbing himself through the snow making his snow angels too much. His biggest challenge for his new owner to look out for is overexcitability— he previously lived without sufficient boundaries, manners, stimulation, and was overfed and bossy. So someone who can make sure Walter sits and waits before the door gets opened, and who walks out first is encouraging the right kind of mindset that this guy would thrive on. He is smart and takes to his new role very proudly, and will be happy to be given directions of what he is supposed to do (“watch the yard”, “go lay on your bed”, “waiting”, “go chew your toy”, etc).
